Performance: The Accidental Hero

June 28 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Patrick Dewane’s one-man show, The Accidental Hero, is the saga of his Grandfather’s contributions in WWII, beginning at the D-Day invasion, then the Battle of the Bulge, and finally the liberation of Czechoslovakia, his family’s homeland.

Bill Lunn, former KSTP anchor and author, hosts this fundraising event for the Stillwater Lions Club; he will highlight the service and sacrifices of all our military. This fundraiser benefits hearing and vision programs of the Lions Club.

The Accidental Hero is the story of Lt. Colonel Matt Konop, who thought he was just another soldier fighting in WW II. Then a string of jaw-dropping coincidences had him liberating the same Czech towns where his grandparents had lived. The Czechs made him a hero, called him their “liberator.” But they actually liberated him, freeing him of his shame of his poor upbringing and connecting him with his identity.

A true story, this one-man show has wowed audiences everywhere.  This multi-media spectacle features never-before-seen WW II film footage shot by Matt Konop with a home movie camera. It is an uplifting and inspirational story about family, country, and a modest man’s unlikely journey to find himself. The Accidental Hero is laugh-out-loud funny, as well as deeply moving. The audience hangs on every turn of this epic story.

The Accidental Hero, performed now seven years in a row in the Czech Republic, has become a tradition during Pilsen’s liberation celebrations in early May each year. In this year’s parade, Patrick rode in a classic allied WWII jeep in front of 100,000 people. (Pilsen/Plzeň is located in western Bohemia, Czech Republic, 55 miles west of Prague.) This story has truly been embraced with much affection by the entire Czech Replubic!

Matt Konop’s home town of Two Rivers, Wisconsin,  is now the sister city of Domažlice, Czech Republic. The Mayor of Domažlice is leading a delegration of ten to Two Rivers to dedicate a bronze plaque honoring Colonel Konop this year during the Fourth of July celebration in Two Rivers.

WWII veterans are invited as Guests of Honor to both the performance and the special dinner.
