Czech Heritage Club Monthly Meeting and Book Talk, 7:00 pm

July 10 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

The Emperor and the Peasant: Two Men at the Start of the Great War and the End of the Habsburg Empire, by Kenneth Janda, is about World War I and Slovak and Czech emigration to the United States. This history, presented in alternating chapters as two intertwined narratives, juxtaposes the experiences of Emperor Franz Josef and Samuel Mozolák–a Slovak peasant and grandfather of the author’s wife.  Mozolák emigrated to New York, started a family, returned to Slovakia, and died on the Eastern Front. The book will be available for purchase with a book signing to follow the lecture.

It may be bought in advance online from the National Czech & Slovak Museum and Library at http://www.ncsml.org/product/emperor-peasant/.

Kenneth Janda is Payson S. Wild Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Northwestern University.

The City Hall meeting rooms are located at 118 Central Avenue North, New Prague, MN  56071.

Free to all.  His talk was originally scheduled for April 18 but cancelled due to the death of John Mozolak, grandson of the peasant in the book.
