Book Talk: Joe & John Gindele, “Yorkville Twins”

May 1 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

Twins John & Joe Gindele, Minnesota authors, residents, and retired teachers, are winners of the Midwest Independent Publishers Association Book Awards. They will present a multimedia program full of humor, wisdom and frank talk called, “A Time to Remember—Looking Back to Yesteryear” on their award-winning memoir, “Yorkville Twins: Growing Up in New York City in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.” The Gindele’s were raised with immigrant parents, a Czech mother and German father (two remarkable people who lived unremarkable lives) in a family of seven in a tough ethnic neighborhood called “Yorkville” on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

These were the early years, the years before television and telephones, computers, cell phones and the Internet (how did they ever survive?). It was a time when parents, teachers and the police were never challenged when news reports, politicians and leaders were believable (just like today–“Ya Sure, You Betcha!”). Doctors John and Joe Gindele and their family lived the American dream! Mom used to say, “Bez práce nejsou koláce.” “Without work, there are no ‘kolaches’.” In essence, without work there are no rewards (this was the immigrant mantra that was drummed into our heads as children, a philosophy immigrants shared in building their beloved new homes in America). Because of our parents and their values, we all got our rewards.

The book will be available for purchase and signings following the presentation or can be ordered in advance directly from www.YorkvilleTwinsBook.com where additional information is available.
