Annual talk: “The Czech and Slovak Marriage: What the Partners Brought to the Union”

May 19 @ 1:00 pm

Free

By John Palka, Professor Emeritus of Biology, University of Washington, and author of My Slovakia, My Family: One Family’s Role in the Birth of a Nation.

This lecture fits into the year-long series of events that celebrate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Czechoslovakia. Palka’s story will be enlivened by personal connections, especially the roles played by his great-granduncle Michal Miloslav Hodža in the Slovak National Awakening of the 19th century and his grandfather Milan Hodža in the establishment of Czechoslovakia and its evolution during the First Republic.

The family aspect of Czechoslovak history is narrated in Palka’s book My Slovakia. The lecture will not be a book presentation, but the book will be available at a discounted price of $20.
